Quiet Weekend

Sorry that I haven't blogged lately. If you read Thumper's blog you know her mom was in the hospital and we went to see her in Texas for a week. The good news is she is recovering well and should go home tomorrow.

I worked four in a row over the weekend. It was a very quiet weekend for the most part. Thursday night I did one case involving a 20 year old with a stab wound to the abdomen. He had minor intestinal damage that was easily repaired.

Friday night was completely quiet with no cases.

On Saturday I did two cases. The first one involved a 19 year old prisoner with a badly broken thumb. We were told that he had been in a fight with another prisoner. The surgeons placed several pins through the base of his thumb to stabilize it. He should recover fully.

My second case of the night involved a 52 year old man who decided to work on his car while on methamphetamine. Some how he managed to drop his car on his head. His left eye was severely damaged and he had multiple facial fractures. The eye surgeons tried to salvage his eye but were unable to. It was decided to wait until the next day to bring him back to the Operating room to work on the rest of his face.

Sunday night was also quiet with no cases. Overall a very quiet weekend.

Multiples

This seems to be a weekend of multiples at work. Friday night I did one case. It involved a seventeen year old boy with multiple stab wounds. He said that several people had attacked him. He had stab wounds on the back of his head, on the neck, both arms and several in the lower back. Fortunately none of his wounds were life threatening. The surgeons repaired one hole in his small intestines and cleaned and closed the other wounds. He should fully recover.

Last night about midnight the ER rushed up another young man with multiple gunshot wounds. He had 12 different holes in his body though several of them were entrance and exit wounds. He was bleeding internally and was barely conscious when he arrived. The surgeons took four hours to remove his spleen as well as several segments of small intestine and put in a chest tube to reinflate his left lung. I gave him 10 units of blood products as well as lots of other fluids. I left his breathing tube in and we took him to the ICU at the end of the case.

One more night to go.
